The 460 Channel Lock straight serrated jaw tongue and groove pliers were just a smidge too small to use on 4 inch EMT fittings or 4 inch GRC conduit. It's the precise perfect size to enrage any electrician. One of Channel Lock's now defunct competitors added one more groove and their pliers would actually fit, perfectly well, and work. The competitor also used drop forged tongue and groove slots and induction hardened teeth on the jaws. These 480s are kind of too large. An extra groove on the 460s would have hit that sweet spot that the other pliers did so well. At this size the handles are a bit too short to get good leverage, so it's a compromise between a huge set of pliers and not being too large for a tradesman's portable tool box. A giant pair of chain wrenches become the proper tools for 3-1/2, 4,5 and 6 inch GRC. 5 inch EMT does not exist. 5 and 6 inch electrical conduit is all GRC galvanized threaded malleable iron rigid pipe. An inspector worth his salt will point out that the code says "Shall be wrench tight", not pliers tight. I still very much like to have the options that Channel Lock offers included with the overtly aggressive teeth of using the finest German made pliers too. My 440s got my 1970 GMC 2500 truck fixed on the roadside at 2:37 AM. The jaws were hard enough to smooth off the chunks bearing races that had galled onto the spindle so I could install new wheel bearings and safely drive my truck home. Thankfully we had 24 Hour Automotive Sales parts houses back then. Parts from Peterbilt, Kenworth and Freightliner trucks to Ford, Chrysler, GM, and imports that included Rolls Royce. That said, I'd like to see the handles on these a tad longer.
Made in USA quality tool. This is my second pair so I can have one in both shops.
It worked perfectly.
Exactly what I expected
Good plumbing tool to have on hand
